Jon-Rae Fletcher

Jon-Rae Fletcher (of Jon-Rae & the River) is something of a media darling these days. Find out more below.

Artist: Buffy Sainte-Marie

FEATURED STORY: WORLD PREMIERE OF BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE ON BRAVO!

The premiere presentation of a television documentary will chronicle the extraordinary life of influential singer-songwriter and Native American icon, Buffy Sainte-Marie. A co-production between CineFocus Canada and Paquin Entertainment, Buffy Sainte-Marie: A Multimedia Life draws on current and archival footage, personal stories, marquee names and exotic locations including interviews with Joni Mitchell, Randy Bachman Taj Mahal and Bill Cosby, among others.

The one-hour documentary follows Buffy's exciting and unpredictable path, from rising to prominence in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, to winning an Academy Award for her hit song "Up Where We Belong," to appearing on Sesame Street and becoming a United Nations spokesperson.

Buffy Sainte-Marie: A Multimedia Life premieres on Bravo TV November 14th at 8 PM (ET).

FEATURED ARTIST: THE BE GOOD TANYAS

The Be Good Tanyas understand the lonesome, exhilarating feeling of travelling without a destination. This trio of wistful harmony-makers met in the mountains and recorded their first album in a wooden shack on the outskirts of Vancouver in 2000. The album, Blue Horse (Nettwerk), was voted one of the top ten albums of 2000 by four different Canadian music magazines. Since then, they've toured North America, the UK and Australia with "Great North-meets-Deep-South soulfulness and rhythms." Their intricate mix of country, early American folk and blues envelops you into a world that is, paradoxically, both haunting and soothing.

Their third full-length release, Hello Love (Nettwerk), grew out of a wealth of recordings laid down over the course of the year. The album, which was released on October 10, 2006, features a tight collection of original recordings and cover songs - including Neil Young's "For the Turnstiles." As always, their beautiful arrangements and heart-rending vocals reveal a musical integrity and lack of pretension that critics and audiences have come to expect.

Beverley Mahood
Since her 1998 debut CD, Girl Out of The Ordinary, singer, songwriter, actor and TV host Beverley Mahood has been building her profile in the country music scene. The debut garnered seven Top 10 Hit radio singles and a #1 video. In 1999 Mahood worked with David Foster in the female trio, Lace, yielding a #1 song and three years of touring. Mahood pens her own songs and has co-written many others-including Celine Dion's hit single, "Come to Me." Mahood's new CD will be released in early 2007 with songs written with Randy Bachman, Dan Hill, and Thomas Wade. From stage to screen, Mahood's skills are reaching new heights.

Ennis Sisters
These 2002 winners of the East Coast Music Award for Group of The Year and Juno for Best New Country Group have reemerged with Be Here for a While. Oldest sister Maureen remains the group's primary songwriter whose honest lyrics and strong melodies have impressed legendary Randy Scruggs, Susan Gibson and Tommy Lee-all of whom are eager to co-write. Despite Maureen's focus on contemporary compositions, the sisters remain true to their Newfoundland roots.

Jim Bryson
Ottawa native Jim Bryson's songs are a cultivated mix of hope and doubt, longing and uncertainty. Described as "folk songs played with rock instruments" and "rock songs played with folk instruments," they lilt and sway between the two. Still relatively unknown in the US, Jim has toured Canada and the UK over the past few years, building a loyal fan base. His critically acclaimed releases include 2000's The Occasionals and 2003's The North Side Benches, the latter of which appeared on many year-end "Best of" lists including that of Billboard's Jason MacNeil and Americana UK's Tim Ford. His guitar and vocals can be heard on albums by Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer and Howe Gelb.

POP MONTREAL A ÉTÉ MAGNIFIQUE!

STORY: POP MONTREAL A ÉTÉ MAGNIFIQUE!

Pop Montreal was magnifique. On Thursday, Tokyo Police Club rocked Salla Rossa to a near-capacity crowd filled with fans and industry envoys. Agents and band mates celebrated with a round of poutine and ensuing stomach ailments. Friday was jammed packed with wild cab rides and poorly spoken French. At O Patro Vys, Spiral Beach bubbled over with youthful exuberance onto a heavily anticipated crowd. Down the street at Club Lambi, the queue wound around two flights of stairs to check out electro rap hero Cadence Weapon and exhilarating pop songsters, The Russian Futurists. Back at O Patro Vys, Torngat's engaging soundscapes lit up the stage, followed by the dreamy vibes and golden-spectacle of the Hylozoists and the elegant stomp and warble of Cuff the Duke. The room was at capacity all night long. On Saturday night, indie music mavens mingled at Le National for the Paquin Showcase where Akron/Family, Beirut and Born Ruffians played to an elated crowd, sharing the stage for an epic finale.

  • We are proud to announce that Corb Lund, The Road Hammers, The Cruzeros, Alana Levandoski, Novillero - along with Paquin Entertainment's agency division and our CEO, Gilles Paquin - all received nominations for the Western Canada Music Awards.
