FEATURED STORY: SAM MOORE, MORE THAN AN OVERNIGHT SENSATION IN JAPAN |
The energy was luminous as Sam Moore and his ten-piece band played to a capacity crowd at Tokyo's prestigious Blue Note. For five nights in November, Sam and his crew played selections from his critically-acclaimed release, Overnight Sensation, soaring through songs like "Soul Man," "When Something is Wrong with my Baby," "I Can't Stand the Rain," among others. Each show ended with a tribute to the late Billy Preston, performing an emotional "You Are So Beautiful"- a Grammy-nominated song that Sam recorded with Eric Clapton and Preston not long before Preston's passing. Each night the song was played, tears ran down the faces of moved audience members. But all tears were brushed aside as fans were won over by Sam's prevailing funkiness, prompted out of their seats to sing and sway. |
The week-long run in Tokyo was a homecoming of sorts as Sam's duo, "Sam and Dave," had enjoyed a huge wave of success in Japan in the 60's. Paquin Entertainment's Aaron Schubert accompanied Sam and his wife/manager, Joyce Moore, on a full day of radio/press appearances. The love and respect shown to this rock'n'roll hall-of-famer was a beautiful sight to see. |

FEATURED ARTIST: SERENA RYDER |
Serena Ryder is just 23. But her voice-a deep, bluesy, soulful instrument that has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin-makes her sound much older. In her major label debut album, If Your Memory Serves You Well, Ryder covers vintage Canadian songs. From Shelton Brooks' "Some of These Days"-recorded by Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday-to Percy Faiths' "My Heart Cries for You"-previously recorded by Ray Charles-her renditions are as much a testament to her talent as they are a tribute to the lasting resonance of the songs themselves. |
The idea for the album came about after Ryder's performance for the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) in 2005. CSHF founder, Frank Davies, was so impressed with Ryder that he suggested she record a collection of Canadian gems. After considering 500 songs, and narrowing the list down to 45, they settled on 12 for the album. Ultimately, there was little disagreement, but as Ryder explains, "some things really are just meant to happen." |
