FEATURED STORY: TEGAN & SARA |
With a list of accomplishments that would make any musician blush with pride, the popular indie/pop duo of Tegan & Sara add yet another achievement to their impressive resume with the release of their fifth album, The Con, on July 24th. Hailed by the NY Times as an album "to obsess over," it is already being branded as perhaps one of the year's best. |
Since winning their first garage band competition in high school, these Calgary born twins have been topping success with success. They've toured with The Killers and Neil Young; been covered by The White Stripes; been honoured with two Juno nominations; run the late night TV circuit with appearances on David Letterman and Conan O'Brien; and their songs grace both movie and TV show soundtracks, including the hit program Grey's Anatomy. Now, an intercontinental tour with a string of sold-out dates keeps them moving into early December. |

FEATURED ARTIST: BUFFY RETURNS |
World-renowned folk singer/songwriter, activist and educator, Buffy Sainte-Marie recently travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to a country of people who have waited for 41 years to see her sing again. |
Playing to a festival crowd of over 14,000 people at the Kaustinen Music Festival (Kaustinen, Finland), Buffy's performance was as bewildering as fans remembered in 1966. Off of her soon-to-be released album, Buffy mesmerized the audience with her new songs, AIM Elijah and Cho Cho Fire, both of which were hits that brought down the house at her recent concert at the Highline Ballroom in New York City. |
For Finland's greatest folk singer/songwriter, Heikki Harma (aka Hector), the Kaustinen Festival was a rare opportunity to reunite him with Buffy. Hector, who recently announced his retirement, began his career in the 60s with his first hit Palkkasoturi, a Finnish cover of Buffy's Universal Soldier. At the end of Hector's final set at this year's Festival, Buffy joined him on stage for a rendition of the very song that launched his 40-year career. |
A meaningful end to Hector's performance career and an excellent example of Buffy's influence on the folk scene worldwide, as well as her incredible vitality over the decades. |

Andy Jones: "An Evening with Uncle Val"
Andy Jones has been a professional writer and actor for over thirty years. He has written five critically-acclaimed one-man comedy shows: Out of the Bin, Still Alive, King O' Fun, To The Wall, and An Evening with Uncle Val.
Andy Jones, as Uncle Val, is a hilariously indignant, 70 year old retired fisherman, displaced from his outport home. The year is 1987, and Uncle Val is now trapped in the 'big city' of St. John's. Homesick, Val struggles to figure out what life has left to offer him. Uncle Val's journey brings us an evening of Christmas reminiscences, encounters with the Beatles, and the danger of St. John's winters, or as Val likes to call it: The Seniors' Olympics. There are births, deaths and even romances, as Val struggles to find his place in 'city' life.

Wendy McNeil
Described as an artist that creates "deep, dark, twisted tales" and "wise, moving music," Wendy McNeil has been steadily gaining acclaim for her dynamic and engaging live performance. Alternating between the raucously catchy and emotionally searing to the sweet and sorrowful, her guitar and accordion-laden tunes take the listener on a mesmerizing journey into the past while at the same time they plunge us irresistibly into the always challenging and joyous vortex of the modern.

STORY: CANADA'S WILD, WILD WEST |
During the first 2 weeks of July, Calgarians dusted off their chaps, polished their shiny belts and stretched out their jeans to prepare for "the greatest outdoor show on earth," also known as The Calgary Stampede. Each year, it lures out cowboy culture lovers and music aficionados from all across the country. It exposes audiences to an array of eclectic musicians, which range from rock to country to family entertainment in three colossal venues. |
By day, families enjoyed music and dancing by the ever-energetic Backyardigans live on stage and by night, fans reveled to the sounds The Road Hammers' no-nonsense, kick-ass mix of country, southern rock and blues, Corb Lund's cleverly written lyrics set to catchy, true-blue country melodies, Prairie Oysters' relaxed and intimate sounds with a blend experience and Beverly Mahood's illustrious voice. |
The Calgary Stampede, not only is it dramatic but it is larger than life and wildly popular with millions! |

DID WE MENTION?
- Canadian pride was in the air this past weekend, as our own Corb Lund was the only Canadian to perform on the main stage at this past year's infamous Glastonbury Festival. 177,000 people turned out for the sold-out event, the UK's largest outdoor festival. Fellow Canucks on the bill included Tokyo Police Club, The Arcade Fire, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, The New Pornographers and You Say Party! We Say Die!
- Wonder kids, Tokyo Police Club have seen the kind of rise to fame in the last year that most bands spend their whole careers trying to achieve. As a reward for their tireless touring in promotion of their EP, A Lesson in Crime, Ontario's 'four headed beast of tunefulness' will be gracing the main stage at this year's Lollapalooza. In addition, the band has self-released a single, Your English is Good, to appease the crowds who flock to their sold out shows, and who just can't wait for their full-length to drop.
- Doc Walker opened for Bon Jovi on July 12th. The Manitoba natives played a heavily praised set at Alberta's Rexall Place. The band thrilled fans with their latest hook-laden single, What Do You See, which was the #1 most added tune on the country radio charts last week.
- In recent years, Montreal has become a mecca for the vibrant Canadian indie rock scene, and with half of this year's Polaris prize nominees hailing from this city, the trend shows no sign of slowing. New to the Paquin roster, the very hot Land of Talk will be embracing the upcoming cold and joining The Decemberists on a 3 week trek through the UK, following a string of North American dates. This tour will be in promotion of their feral 7-song masterpiece, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, and their primal take on indie rock - emphasis on rock.
- Canada's independent music authority, Exclaim Magazine is sending some of our best and brightest this October on their Exclaim! Roots Tour, spreading maple-fueled magic through the land and providing a perfect soundtrack for fall. Headliners, Elliott Brood will be bringing their distinct brand of country-tinged folk rock and will be joined by Ottawa's The Acorn.
- Speaking of The Acorn, when they shared their self-released EP, Tin Fist, with Toronto taste-makers, Paperbag Records, the label recognized immediately what it had unearthed. Not ones to wait on a good thing, they quickly snatched up and re-released this tasty little morsel, with the knowledge that once fans heard The Acorn's brand of delicately emotive indie pop, they'd hunger for more. September 15th sees the release of their follow up full-length, Glory Hope Mountain.
- Fresh from completing their first full length album with producer Rusty Santos of Animal Collective (release TBA), Toronto's yelping quirk-rocksters Born Ruffians will be joining Caribou on his world tour, including an impressive journey across the Great White North. Catch them before they begin their 2 month journey at the Hillside festival in Guelph (July 27th) or the Wolfe Island Music Festival in Kingston (August 11th).
- New-school, old-world sensation, Beirut, will be treating seven lucky cities on their upcoming tour, with 2 dates in New York and 2 dates in San Francisco. Those on our side of the border fortunate enough to live in Montreal or Toronto will be privy to this 10-piece band's phenomenal live show. Audiences can catch Beirut fever at La Sala Rossa in Montreal on September 30th and at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall on October 2nd.
