Julie Doiron, 2007 Polaris Prize nominee

Julie Doiron, 2007 Polaris Prize nominee, is a bright new addition to Paquin's roster.

Feature Story: Paul Anka

FEATURE STORY: PAUL ANKA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN MUSIC

To commemorate his 50th anniversary as one of this century's most successful entertainers and songwriters, Paul Anka will be releasing his most heartfelt and personal album to date, Classic Songs, My Way. The album, out September 4th on Decca/Universal Music Canada, is a collection of Anka's hand-picked favourite songs, covering the gamut of his own greatest hits, to elite singer-songwriters, pop and adult contemporary classics.

Arranged for big band in the vein of his last critically-acclaimed disc, Rock Swings, the new CD showcases Anka's unmistakable vocals, and his uncanny ability to make any song his own with style and panache. The record boasts musical offerings for longtime fans and new devotees alike.

Memorable moments on Classic Songs, My Way include the Joni Mitchell treasure, "Both Sides Now," the Cyndi Lauper staple, "Time After Time," an unexpected rendition of The Killers "Mr. Brightside" and a new duet version of "My Way" with Jon Bon Jovi, arguably one of Anka's most beloved songs. Anka will be touring Canada through the fall.

FEATURED ARTIST: THE WAILIN' JENNYS

The Wailin' Jennys have always captivated audiences with their enchanting harmonies and engaging stage presence. For centuries the number three has held mystical significance. Three primary colours; past, present, future; countless idioms structured in threes; threes in nursery rhymes and fairy tales; threes in religion, mythology, science, mathematics and language. Good things come in threes. The Wailin' Jennys are no exception, exemplifying the harmonious unity of three.

Critics rave that they are "almost too good to be true," and a string of nominations and awards highlight their success. With an ever-growing fan base, the Jennys have ventured across North America, Europe, and Australia. Excited to explore the possibilities of their newest incarnation, and with no intentions of slowing down, this dynamic trio is in the process of touring through the UK, Canada and the US over the next several months.

Brian Byrne
Brian Byrne beat out thousands of hopefuls for the job as platinum-selling rock band, I Mother Earth's lead singer. And after 10 years, 3 records and hundreds of shows around the world, Brian began to find his way back to the stories, melodies and songwriting of his youth; back to country music. Simple, genuine and honest - just like home.

The Divorcees
Canada's premier ambassadors of all things Honky Tonk, The Divorcees, are packing bars nation-wide as they hammer out their brand of renegade country music. Their recent tour was met with celebrated reviews by the media, including Exclaim Magazine and CMT.

Julie Doiron
Julie's been making music since she was 17 and played bass with indie rock icon's Eric's Trip. Since 1996, Julie has released 8 CD's, which have been released all over the world. She won a Juno for her 2000 release Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars, and her most recent release, Woke Myself Up was just nominated for the prestigious Polaris Prize.

Paul Anka
Paul Anka has a staggering 900 songs to his credit - 130 recorded by other artists including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand and Linda Ronstadt. Paul Anka is also the man behind international hits, such as: "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" (Buddy Holly), "She's a Lady" (Tom Jones), "Puppy Love" (Donny Osmond) and, of course, "My Way" (Frank Sinatra).

Shrimp Magnet's The Land of I-Told-You-So
Touted by Now Magazine as a "success," Shrimp Magnet's production of The Land of I-Told-You-So is about Pippa Schmidt, an independent-minded, strong-willed, 8 year old apple-loving girl. This twisted fairy tale combines songs, dances, mask work, imaginative staging and lots of audience participation to create a truly memorable experience for everyone!

Shrimp Magnet's The Emperor's New Clothes
In this Shrimp Magnet version the Emperor is actually not all that vain; the fancy designer, Jean-Biff Gaultier's clothes can only be seen by Robin, the castle's potato scrubber. Once again, you're needed to save the day and save the Emperor from seriously embarrassing himself!

Shrimp Magnet's Really Real Adventures of Scott-Free and Will-Do
Scott-Free and Will-Do are best friends who spend all their time dreaming up fantastic worlds and adventures only to find one day that their imaginations have run away with them! Reality is hot on their heels and they need to figure out what's what, who's who, and what's really real before their moms make them grow up for good!

Thunderheist
Dubbed as the "2007 Noisemaker" by the Montreal Mirror, Thunderheist's rattling bass breaks are laced with proper rhyming and flipped with digital booty bass, 80s-inspired electronic pop, and slowed down Southern bounce, all fresh dipped in serious swagger.

DID WE MENTION?

  • Last month, a panel of more than 170 music journalists and broadcasters across Canada submitted their top five picks for the Polaris Music Prize, which annually honours the best Canadian album. After tallying the votes, the shortlist was determined and it was down to 10 nominees; among them is Julie Doiron's album, Woke Myself Up (Endearing). The winner stands to win $20,000, Canada's largest music prize. Results will be announced on September 24th, in Toronto.
  • Lollapalooza. The Late Show. There are certain milestones that signify that a band has made it big. In the last year Tokyo Police Club has been ripping through them with voracious speed and infinite energy. This fall, the boys add Madison Square Garden to the list, as they head down to open for the Bloc Party in October. Next up: Carnegie Hall?
  • Scratchy-voiced former school teacher, Gerry Dee has made it to the final 5 on "Last Comic Standing." Audiences can vote to support the Canuck comic by tuning in to NBC Wednesdays, 9/8 Central. The grand prize winner will receive $250,000, plus an exclusive talent contract with NBC Universal and his or her own half-hour comedy special on Bravo.
  • Big things are brewing for the little band that could, Great Lake Swimmers. The trio will be taking their hauntingly minimalist brand of delicate folk to a decidedly bigger venue than ever before, Toronto's renowned Phoenix concert hall, on Saturday, September 29th. Special guests will be joining them, and then they'll be setting off on a North American tour with some big names, including violin virtuoso, Final Fantasy, chamber-pop songstress Basia Bulat and folk-pop darlings Ohbijou.
  • Ashley MacIsaac's music, maritime roots and blood ties saw him sharing a stage with The White Stripes on their Icky Thump tour this summer. The rock fiddler sensation from Nova Scotia opened the Detroit duo's 10th anniversary concert July 14th at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, N.S. It only seems fitting that the famous fiddler should open for the acclaimed rock pair Jack and Meg White in Cape Breton - especially since it has been confirmed that MacIsaac is Jack White's distant cousin.
  • Sharron Matthews ("Sharron's Party") is absolutely melting with excitement, as she has been cast as "The Wicked Witch of the West" in the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People's (LKTYP) production of "The Wizard of Oz," playing this December. Toronto's LKTYP is the largest non-profit theatre company for young audiences in Canada and presents new Canadian plays, innovative works and classics from children's literature throughout the season.
  • Orch-Pop London lovely Basia Bulat has signed to Hardwood Records (home to Hayden and Cuff the Duke). Her debut album Oh, My Darling will be released in Canada on Sept.18th, 2007, featuring a brand new bonus track which did not appear on the European release. She'll be following up on her summer full of celebrated dates at festivals like Wolff Island and Hillside with not one but two Toronto CD release shows at the Music Gallery (September 22nd), and will be waltzing her way across North American with Final Fantasy this fall.
