FEATURED ARTIST: TOKYO POLICE CLUB
"Think Franz Ferdinand mixed with the Arctic Monkeys, with more optimism and less self-concious attempts at cool," (National Post). Early reviews of Elephant Shell, Tokyo Police Club's debut full-length album, are overwhelmingly positive but that's no surprise, considering the band's skyrocketing success. In just under three years, the band has played twice on the Late Show with David Letterman (most recently on April 23 - a day after Elephant Shell's release) and have graced the stage at some of the biggest music festivals in the world, including Coachella and Glastonbury.
Elephant Shell is somewhat of a departure from Tokyo Police Club's first EP, A Lesson in Crime - which is described as 16 terse minutes of unrivalled energy amounting to a keg of Red Bull, thanks to a sputtering guitar reverb, hearty gang chants and a surplus of handclaps (Exclaim). The new album reflects the band's seasoned repertoire after two years of solid touring and playing hundreds of shows all over the world. Although fans have waited two years for Elephant Shell, it was worth it. Check out TPC's website for a list of their upcoming live shows.

Jaymay
Jaymay would probably be happy if her bio read in full: Jaymay's a young New Yorker in love with books and music who writes eloquent, beautiful songs about the heart, her life in New York and the seasons. Her first album Autumn Fallin' was released in March on Blue Note. Her music is described as "positively reeking of rain slicked city streets and the sweet, addictive melancholia of falling head-over-heels into the abyss." (Word)

Slim Twig
Slim Twig, a performer and songsculptor based out of Toronto, is a chameleonic artist in the tradition of Bowie or Beck. His sound has morphed from his early apocalyptic folk incarnation to a fuller art-pop sound and, most recently, the self-coined genre of Concrete Rockabilly with a gritty, sample-based aesthetic. "An unhinged rockabilly hound who sounds like a kid brother to Nick Cave, Jon Spencer and Suicide's Alan Vega, Slim Twig mixes eerie electronics with bare-bones rock'n'roll." (Toronto Life)
