FEATURED ARTIST: THE HIGGINS
They've already had a rich, enviable career over the last couple of years, working festivals, award shows and, memorably, before 60,000 people in Guangzhou, China. With the country music community rubbing its hands nearly raw in anticipation, The Higgins have released their latest album, Real Things (Open Road).
"Flower Child," their first hook-laden single off of Real Things has been flying up the charts, landing at #5 on CMT, #13 on national radio charts and the video coming in at #3 on CMT's Chevy Cross Canada Countdown.
After a full month of touring to support the release of Real Things, The Higgins won't be slowing down for the summer. John, Eileen and Kathleen's sweet, soaring harmonies will find their way through a host of festivals from Toronto to Vancouver to Washington.
Real Things is available in stores now.

Jon and Roy
Jon and Roy is centered around the songwriting of Jon Middleton; Roy Vizer adds the percussive boom that turns folk tunes into groovy ones. The duo has released two albums titled Sittin' Back and Another Noon (Pacific Music/Warner). Constantly driven by their growing fan base, Jon and Roy aren't ones to put anything between them and their friends and fans. This is what keeps the group fresh, humble and inspired.
Ladies of the Canyon
Built of four of the strongest musical voices in Montreal's thriving, celebrated scene, Ladies of The Canyon are candy-sweet folk pop one minute and heart-wrenching soulful complaint the next. Proclaimed as one of the top ten bands and "Noisemakers 2008" (Montreal Mirror), Ladies of the Canyon are beautiful breeders of a timeless, roots-influenced sound that is addictive and moving.
Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers
Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers is a Massachusetts' trio made up of two distinct parts. In one corner stands the unmistakably jubilant personality of rock-n-roll's The Sixers; in the other sits an authentic American songwriter in a period of profound growth. Rising triumphantly in the center is a band whose music is the perfect marriage of the two.

DID WE MENTION?

  • It's one thing that Jaydee Bixby was the runner-up on Canadian Idol with millions of adoring fans or that he had legendary singer Paul Anka endorse his talent - "[Jaydee Bixby] has the type of talent that will keep him around for decades to come" - but quite another that his first album, Cowboys and Cadillacs (HRM/Fontana North), debuted at #1 on the Canadian country chart and #8 on the overall Canadian album charts. Not only that, but Jaydee's first single, "Old Fashioned Girl," jumped to #4 in its first week on iTunes' Top Country Songs and continues to steadily climb Canada's country air play chart to #17, up against staples like Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban. Cowboys and Cadillacs intertwines Bixby's inherent down home, twangy roots with a rock edge to create enduring country anthems. Jaydee will be making a triumphant return to the Canadian Idol stage on July 22nd. Tune in at 9pm EST to see why he's turning out to be an Idol in his own right.
  • Blue King Brown is returning to North America after a massive year of touring in 2007 with the likes of Damian "Jr Gong" Marley, Michael Franti and Spearhead, John Butler Trio and legend Carlos Santana. Led by the fiery vocals and political lyrics of Natalie Paapaa, Blue King Brown's tour begins on July 31 in Santa Monica, bringing their hard hitting urban roots sound to cities throughout Canada and the U.S. including Vancouver, Whistler, Calgary, Boston and New York. Visit their website for all of their tour dates.
  • Call it "country punk," "blue-grass" or "killbilly" - Swedish band, Baskery is packing a mighty punch with their mix of frenetic high voltage blend of roots infused music. Formerly known as Slaptones, who previously toured with The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Baskery is made up of three sisters: Greta, Stella and Sunniva. In support of their debut album, Fall Among Thieves, Baskery will kick off their tour on July 24th in Toronto and sweep across the country to Calgary and Vancouver before heading back to Europe. Visit their website for their full tour schedule.
  • After an intensive search for the funniest comedian on the planet, Sean Cullen is a finalist on NBC's Emmy-nominated series, "Last Comic Standing." The 12 finalists have returned to Las Vegas for weekly comedy showdowns. The winner stands to win a $250,000 grand prize including an exclusive talent deal with NBC, a brand new Honda and a starring appearance in Jubilee! at Bally's Las Vegas. • Internet sensations The Imponderables are Canada's multi-award winning, history-making sketch comedy foursome with an absurdist sense of humour backed by nearly a decade of finely honed chemistry. Their video The Waldo Ultimatum, a very successful parody of The Bourne Ultimatum, is generating big buzz, including a mention in Entertainment Weekly! Find The Imponderables on July 24th and 25th at Just for Laughs: Club Series.
  • Adam Growe's one man show "The Mom & Pop Shop" is a Toronto Fringe success! "The Mom & Pop Shop" takes place at a parenting resource centre, where people pretend it's possible to prepare for parenthood. Adam is called to cover for the prenatal teacher, but eventually he abandons the lesson plan and begins to impart his own unsubstantiated philosophies from the pulpit of parenting pedagogy. Everyone is surprised by what Adam delivers! The Toronto Star raves that it is "bursting with one man humour!" and Eye Weekly says "Growe gives a confident and hilarious performance (4 stars)."
  • Simon Cotter, along with fellow comedian, Scott Harris, have created a new comedy show called "Baby Boomers The Show." A trip down memory lane, Cotter and Harris revisit the 50's, 60's and 70's: Ever make out at the drive-in? Listen to an eight track? Wear something tie-dyed? If you "loved Lucy" or "dreamed of Jeanie," then this is the show for you. After a successful appearance at this year's LOL Sudbury Comedy Festival, they'll be coming to a theatre near you soon!
  • "The Jon Dore Television Show" will be premiering its 2nd season on the Comedy Network this fall. The series stars award-winning comic Jon Dore whose flat-out, crazy take on life is told through an array of real-life interviews, off-the-wall tangents and wild antics. In each episode, Dore fearlessly throws himself in the line-of-fire as he sets out to correct his faults and make all his "wrongs" right again. You can also catch Jon Dore headlining The Comedy Lounge tour starting in October.
