About
Since forming in early 2015, Super Duty Tough Work has quickly established itself as the region's premier hip-hop outfit. Fronted by Brendan Grey (aka Giant #3 of Sleeping Giants), and backed by a well-curated ensemble of highly-skilled local and international musicians, SDTW is an eight-piece powerhouse. After gaining notoriety for their consistently sold out, overcapacity Dilla Day events (including a well-received Saskatoon edition), SDTW went on to play selected festival and club dates, garnering a reputation for their methodically curated live shows, mixing high energy and laid-back for an unforgettable live music experience.
Inspired by the dirty jazz loop sound of 90s east coast hip hop, SDTW are the live incarnation of hip-hop's quintessential era. Performances see the group combining live instrumentation with an array of vocal stylings, hypnotizing audiences with rolling loops, and rapid-fire lyric delivery, that sees subject matter ranging from social commentary to partying and having fun, to detailing the ups and downs of being a musician/creative in today's world.
Originally the group was a live show only affair. For years the name travelled by word of mouth, but lack of an online presence or available music made the group more mythical than real. In early 2017 SDTW released their first single, 'Hypnotic', which led to the group being twice chosen by CBC producers to ascend in CBC's Searchlight competition.
Throughout 2017 and 2018, the band has continued their lowkey approach, forging new contacts and making select appearances at festivals and clubs, including another sold out (and final) Dilla Day event, as well as performing on the Red Bull truck at this year's Bastid's BBQ, an outdoor jam thrown by Canadian DJ pillar and legend, Skratch Bastid.
Currently, the group is gearing up to release their debut EP in the Spring of 2019, with a Canadian tour to accompany the release planned for September/October.
